Grace: Day 5 of 40 Days of Lent
There are two core ways we view grace in the Christian faith:
The first is shared on website name: God's grace is usually defined as undeserved favor. Grace cannot be earned; it is something that is freely given. We count on God's grace and the bridge he built in our relationship with him. Bible verses about grace abound. From the foundation of the Old Testament, we know that grace is a part of God's character.
The second is more acutely viewed as Divine Grace:
Divine grace is a theological term present in many religions. It has been defined as the divine influence which operates in humans to regenerate and sanctify, to inspire virtuous impulses, and to impart strength to endure trial and resist temptation; and as an individual virtue or excellence of divine origin. (Wikipedia)
We will focus on the latter as we build on the previous four days of our 40-day journey. The divine empowerment to endure trials, resist temptation and inspire virtuous impulses. In short, the power of God at work in us.
Ephesians 3:20-21 notes:
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. (KJV)
This grace is essential in the commemoration of the 40 days of fasting that Jesus endured before stepping into his ministry. Without the grace of God, 40 days of no food or water would have been impossible. The intense testing he endured required more than his will. It required complete submission to the will of God and the grace to overcome the enemy over and over again.
Grace can be corporate and individual. This Holy Spirit empowerment that can not be earned is what we consider favor.
The tough part about grace is that it’s presence denotes the weakness and struggle of the receiver:
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (2 Corinthians 12:7-9)
As you pray deeply concerning the Grace of God and the necessity of it to overcome temptation and endure trials, remember to pray for the heart to receive it. Pray for the heart and the mind of Jesus to be the divine blueprint by which you remain open to acknowledge your limitations and receive the Grace of God over your life.
